Signing in and your account
This guide covers getting into Earnest the first time, signing in after that, getting back in if you forget your password, and the settings you control yourself. It applies to everyone: reps, managers and admins.
Accept your invite
Your admin creates your Earnest account. When they invite you, you get an email.
- Open the email called "Welcome to Earnest — your account is ready".
- Click Set Password & Login. The link works for 24 hours.
- On the page that opens, type a password into New Password and again into Confirm Password. It needs at least 8 characters, including 1 number and 1 symbol.
- Click Set Password. You see "Password Set".
- Click Sign in and sign in with your email and the password you chose.
If your work email is a Google account, you can skip the password. Click Sign in with Google on the same page instead. Google sign-in works when the Google account's address is the same one your admin invited.
If the link has expired, ask your admin to send a new invite. Each new invite replaces the old link. You can also go to the sign-in page, click Forgot password?, and set a password from the reset email (see below).
If you never got an invite email, your admin may have added you without one. Ask them to send it, or use Forgot password? to set a password yourself.
- Go to earnestcomp.com/login.
- Click Sign in with Google, or type your Email and Password and click Sign in.
Admins land on Payouts. Reps and managers land on their Dashboard.
If you belong to more than one organization, an organization switcher appears in the header so you can move between them.
How long you stay signed in
You're signed out after 8 hours without using Earnest, and after 12 hours in any case, even if you've been active. The sign-in page then says "Your session has ended. Please sign in again."
To sign out yourself, click Sign out in the menu.
Reset a forgotten password
- On the sign-in page, click Forgot password?.
- Type your Work Email and click Send Reset Link.
- Open the email called "Reset your password for Earnest" and click the link. It works for 1 hour.
- Type a new password into New Password and Confirm Password, then click Reset Password.
- You see "Password Reset Successful". Click Sign in with new password.
For your security, the page says "Check your email" whether or not an account exists for the address you typed. If you request more than three links in 15 minutes, the extra requests don't send an email. Wait a few minutes and use the most recent link you received.
Your account settings
Reps and managers open Settings in the menu. Admins click Profile at the top right (or Profile in the menu on a phone). The page has three parts.
Profile
Shows your Name and Email. You can't edit either one yourself, and your admin can't change them in the app. To change your name or email, ask your admin to contact support@earnestcomp.com. When support changes your email, Earnest sends a new setup link to the new address. Your old password and any Google sign-in stop working, and you set a password again from that link.
Notification emails
Three switches decide which emails Earnest sends you:
| Switch | When it emails you |
|---|---|
| Payout statements | When a payout is published. The email includes your statement as a PDF. |
| Adjustments | When an adjustment to your pay is approved or rejected. |
| Plan changes | When your comp plan, quota or team changes. |
Each switch saves as soon as you flip it, and you see "Notification preferences saved".
These switches only control email. You always see the same notices in your in-app inbox, and your statements are always under Payouts. Your admin can also turn a type of email off for the whole organization. If they have, switching it on here won't bring it back.
Change Password
- Type your Current Password.
- Type a New Password and repeat it in Confirm New Password.
- Click Change Password.
Earnest then signs you out everywhere. Sign in again with the new password. The sign-in page says "Password changed — please sign in again."
If you only ever sign in with Google, your account has no Earnest password to change, and you'll see "Password change is not available for OAuth accounts". Your Google account's own password is the one that matters.
A copy of your data
There's no self-service export of your own data. Your statements can be downloaded from Payouts. For a full copy of what Earnest holds about you, ask your admin. They can export it from the People page.
Check it worked
- After signing in you see Payouts (admins) or your Dashboard (reps and managers).
- Your settings page shows your name and email under Profile.
Common problems
- "Invalid email or password". Check for typos, then use Forgot password?. The same message appears if your account hasn't been set up yet or has been deactivated, so if a reset doesn't help, ask your admin.
- "We couldn't complete sign-in. If you've had several failed attempts, your account is locked for a short while…" Wait about 15 minutes and try again, or reset your password.
- "This password reset link has expired or has already been used. Please request a new one." Click Request new link and use the newest email.
- "Your company already has an Earnest account, but you haven't been added to it yet." You tried Google sign-in before an admin invited you. Ask an admin to add you.
- "Earnest accounts use your work email. That Google account is a personal address." The Google account you picked isn't the one your admin invited. Click Sign in with Google again and pick the account for the address your admin invited, or sign in with your email and password.
- "We couldn't sign you in. Try again, or sign in with your email and password." Google sign-in didn't finish. If it keeps happening, your account may have been deactivated; ask your admin.
- "Current password is incorrect" or "New password must be different from current password" when changing your password. Re-type your current password, or choose a password you aren't already using.
- Invite or reset emails don't arrive. Check your spam folder, and ask your admin to confirm the email address on your account. Reset emails only go to addresses that have an account.
- Statement or notification emails stopped arriving. Check your switches under Notification emails. If they're on, ask an admin to look under Settings → Email. Earnest stops emailing an address after a hard bounce or spam complaint until an admin reinstates it.
- "Your session has ended. Please sign in again." This is normal after 8 idle hours or 12 hours in total. Sign in again.
